Captain (N) Jason Boyd

Commander, Naval Personnel and Training Group

Captain (Navy) Jason Boyd grew up in Rosetown, Saskatchewan, and was recruited into the Canadian Armed Forces in 1994 to play hockey at the Royal Military College of Canada while pursuing a degree in Political Science and Economics. After completing his degree in 1998, Captain (N) Boyd was posted to Victoria to train as a Naval Warfare Officer (formerly known as Maritime Surface and Sub-Surface (MARS) Officer) and to learn about the Navy, versus the arena.

Throughout his career as a Naval Warfare Officer, Captain (N) Boyd has worked as a bridge watchkeeper in Her Majesty's Canadian Ship (HMCS) Iroquois, ashore as a Shipborne Air Controller (SAC) and SAC Training Officer, as an Anti-Air Warfare Controller and Combat Officer in HMCS Algonquin, and Executive Officer of HMCS Ottawa. He was appointed Commanding Officer of HMCS Regina in May 2012, deploying for more than 8 months to the Gulf of Oman region on Operation ARTEMIS that same year. Captain (N) Boyd also completed the Joint Command and Staff Program in Toronto in 2010.

Captain (N) Boyd's career has taken him across Canada from Victoria to Ottawa to Halifax as well as internationally to Northern Europe as part of NATO in HMCS Iroquois in 1999, Afghanistan as part of Operation APOLLO in 2002, and the Asia-Pacific region in HMCS Ottawa in 2010.

Captain (N) Boyd served two tours as an instructor at the Canadian Forces Naval Operations School in Halifax, which gave him an opportunity to pass on his knowledge to a new generation of naval officers, and in 2012 he was appointed Commanding Officer of the Naval Officer Training Centre in Victoria. In 2014, Captain (N) Boyd served in Ottawa as the Executive Assistant to the Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy, enabling him to gain experience about the strategic environment in Ottawa. He was appointed Director of New Capability Introduction in the summer of 2015, where he worked every day to ensure the seamless introduction of new capabilities during the Royal Canadian Navy's largest recapitalization in its peacetime history. In 2016, Captain (N) Boyd was assigned the role of Sea Combat Commander and Commander of Combined Task Group 170.1 for the John C Stennis Carrier Strike Group where he exercised control over 15 ships from 9 participating nations.

Captain (N) Boyd assumed his current position as Commander of NPTG on June 28th, 2019. Outside of work, he enjoys golfing, spending time in his boat fishing or towing his kids on the tube, and he continues to play hockey for the CFB Esquimalt Senior Tritons. He is ever thankful for the continued support of his wife Deborah, his son Taylor and daughter Grace.
